Author Event: Michael Farris Smith
Page 158 Books welcomes author Michael Farris Smith in conversation about his novel BLACKWOOD.
Michael Farris Smith’s BLACKWOOD is a beautiful, pulsing, living-breathing-thing of a novel; a dark story that stayed with me long after I finished it. At first glance, BLACKWOOD appears to be about a small town on the brink of economic collapse and the lost souls brought together by their shared inability to escape. But at its core, BLACKWOOD reveals for us the intrinsic loneliness of life and the small moments of connection that bring us hope. The world of BLACKWOOD is a cruel one – unflinching and unyielding in the way it tests the mettle of its inhabitants. But shining brightly against this stark backdrop is how human connection - or the lack of it - informs everything around us. Michael Farris Smith has given us a beautiful work of literary fiction with threads of the best and darkest parts of crime fiction woven throughout.
Michael is a native Mississippian who has spent time living abroad in France and Switzerland. He is the recipient of the 2014 Mississippi Author Award and has been awarded the Mississippi Arts Commission Literary Arts Fellowship, the Transatlantic Review Award for Fiction, and the Alabama Arts Council Fellowship Award for Literature. His short fiction has twice been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and his essays have appeared in the New York Times, Catfish Alley, Deep South Magazine, and more. He lives in Columbus, Mississippi, with his wife and two daughters.
